There's a place for people who laugh at nothing...

We've had a couple of good days. Yesterday we saw Beerfest, which wasn't anywhere near as trashy as you might think from the advertising, nor as bad. Likewise for Accepted, which we saw today. If I had to recommend one, it would be the latter. The idea of kids who couldn't get through the college acceptance grinder establishing a phony university on the Internet so that they can say they were accepted somewhere hit very close to home. I could sympathize with the girl who had spent her entire life preparing herself to go to Yale, then being turned down by the admissions process; I've often wondered what might have happened had I been refused at Northwestern, when it was the only college I applied to. (That whole story in and of itself would make a great movie, I think.)

I think I'm finally starting to see certain patterns in films, particularly the sort of "hero's journey" pattern that both of these films were based on. Now, if only I could capitalize on it....I mean, I realize that it comes with practice....it's just the "ass in chair" thing that I have so much trouble with....definitely something to work on as I go "back to school" tomorrow with anderyn, lisapt, and anyone else who wants to join us.

I plan on enjoying the rest of the weekend, no matter what. For some reason, I remember this poem from one of the first "Garfield" cartoons:

Labor Day, Schmabor Day,
What a dumb day:
You hire some jerk
Then send him away,
To celebrate work
By playing all day.

Worthy of the great Ogden Nash. You know, I think more kids would get into poetry if English teachers focused less on e. e. cummings and more on Ogden Nash. Can I get an "amen"?

Enjoy the holiday! I know I will.

By the way, I'm adding a tag for the "back to school" project, so you can follow along if you wish.
