I had this same thought but could not have expressed it as well. Further along this same line of reasoning, I don't understand the need for hate crime legislation. If murder is already a crime, why do we need a separate law prohibiting the murder of a gay person, for instance? Should we establish a separate criminal code for every combination of race/gender/orientation? Or should there simply be criminal laws that apply to all humans?

Exactly. If someone murders someone else without having a good reason (self defense), the circumstances of the victim don't matter; the perpetrator should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. This notion that certain people are entitled to more justice than others is ridiculous. It's what Thomas Sowell calls "cosmic justice". I believe the book is called The Quest for Cosmic Justice; I've read excerpts from it, but should find it. Sowell is a remarkably intelligent and forceful writer and a professor of economics; his books are must-reads.

I've read some of Sowell's things, but it's been a long time and most of it was on economics. Thanks for the reminder, I'll see if I can find any of his books in the local library.
