So true. Schools exist for the purpose of paying salaries to teachers and administrators. Having students file in every morning is just a necessary inconvenience.

I might have told you this before, but my mother was a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools, and consequently a member of the Chicago Teachers Union, for 37 years. My contempt for unions in general, and teachers' unions in particular, comes naturally.

I had forgotten that. I'm glad you didn't take offense. One of my daughters is a teacher and there are several others in my family. My problem is not with individual teachers but with teacher unions and all those who put their own self interest ahead of good education. The way schools are run, especially big city schools, would be hilarious if the effects weren't so tragic.
