Real class, that A-Rod...

Bye-bye, A-Rod: Rodriguez ends contract with New York Yankees

DENVER (AP) -- Alex Rodriguez and agent Scott Boras picked quite a time for their big announcement.

Smack in the middle of Game 4 of the World Series, Boras ended months of speculation and said A-Rod is opting out of the final three seasons of his contract with the New York Yankees.

Oh, and Boras let the Yankees know by leaving a voice mail for general manager Brian Cashman.

At least the Boston fans had the right idea:

After their team won the title for the second time in four seasons, they stood behind the visitors' dugout at Coors Field and chanted: "Don't sign A-Rod!"

I was under the impression that teams couldn't make major announcements until after the World Series. I guess that rule doesn't apply to Scott Boras.

Okay, it isn't A-Rod that made the phone call or made the announcement. It's his handler, Mr. Boras. And, sorry, but given the way the Yankee organization acts, I wish there could have been a MORE disrespectful way to treat them.

Congratulations to Boston. Even if the fans who traveled to Colorado have no class.

Boras and the Yankees deserve each other.

Boras has a hard job ahead of him, trying to get Andruw Jones and his .222 average signed to an A-Rod type deal. Maybe that's why he talked A-Rod into opting out of his contract, so he could get Andruw signed.

As for the Yankees, when do you suppose they'll announce their new manager?

Like you, I'm happy for the Red Sox (with the possible exception of JD Drew, who I didn't like when he was with Atlanta). They're a great organization despite their fans.

Actually, I'm sorry the Rockies didn't put up more of a fight. It wasn't the most interesting series I've ever seen.

Why do you think the Yankee's new manager will be?

I was hoping the same, really. I'd have liked to have seen them win at least two games and send it back to Fenway. As it was, Joe Buck and Tim "I Get Paid By The Word" McCarver called it like the outcome was a foregone conclusion, and the pregame shows were too much Red Sox rah-rah.

I think it'll be Don Mattingly, at least for the first half of the season. Joe Girardi will probably be hired by the Yanks in some capacity until Steinbrenner & Sons decide they've seen enough of Don. If for some reason Girardi isn't available then, Tony Pena will be interim manager until they can get Girardi. In short, I think we're in for a return of the Bronx Zoo.
