Pepper, our senior cat, has been looking a little thin lately, so we took her to the vet. Turns out that she's lost 3 pounds, which is a lot considering she was 8 pounds to begin with. So, after making sure she didn't have worms, they drew some blood and tested it. Turns out that she's hyperthyroid and her white blood count is elevated, so we have a pill for the hyperthyroid and two antibiotics to give her. It'll be easy with her, because she's small, declawed (the only one) and reasonably docile. Still, I worry; she's 12, and has always been my cat, so I feel responsible for her. Will keep you updated as time progresses.

Good luck with Pepper. We had a cat when I was growing up (called Bill), who got a hyperactive thyroid at one point and one side effect was that despite being an old cat, it sped him up, and for the first and only time in his life he managed to catch a squirrel. Which was definitely a dream come true for him.
I'm sure Pepper will be alright - you've found what was wrong, and it's being addressed. That's far more than any cat in the wild would ever get!

Hopefully, Pepper will have many more fine years with her very fine owners. Hoping for the best.
