Last night, we had the next-to-last of my TV writing classes. I was complimented by all on the fact that I had given all of my characters (about six) an individual voice, something which the instructor says is very difficult to do and very much appreciated by people who buy sitcoms. I realized then that, while I do a good job of developing characters, I don't do such a good job of putting the plot together, at least not from the perspective of television (and, as I'm learning, for the rest of my writing), so I'm going to be taking the next class, on plotting and storytelling. The instructor (who I won't name, but who runs this website) emailed us all at the end of the class and told us that every one of us had turned in work that was as good as the first drafts from the pros, and said that was the first time he'd seen that in the basic workshop. It made me feel good, like I'd accomplished something.
Then, today, we went to pick up some things from a friend of ours, and as I was backing out of her driveway, I managed to back over a big rock, and somehow it got wedged under the van. I had to get the jack out to get it out from under there. A little minor damage to the van, not to mention to my ego. Needless to say, now I think it's pretty funny, and I'm going to have to find a way to use it in a story.
I got a call yesterday from my client. They want to use me on a paying job at the end of the month, meaning that they're going to try and certify me next Friday and work with me during the following week to develop the training manual for the customer. Certification=money, and real work=real money. Whoo-hoo! I also got the check for the first half of certification today. Whoo-hoo-hoo! This contracting thing might actually work out.
CSI: NY is a rerun tonight. CBS does this every year during March Madness, runs reruns in between basketball games. I don't personally care about it, even if I did go to the school that won the NCAA championship in 1963. Maybe I can get ready for my debut during that time. Or practice guitar or something. Or maybe even finish Pipsqueak.
