I'm sad to learn of the death of Buck O'Neil, one of the great players from the Negro Leagues. He was sort of a fixture around Kansas City, where my brother lives. Jeff Passan says in his obituary, "Life, to Buck O'Neil, was about love. He loved to tell stories, and he loved to talk about his friends, and did he ever love women, especially ones in red dresses." We could all take a lesson from Buck, who has still never made it to the Hall of Fame. Perhaps now, he will. A lot of people don't realize that Bucky, from the cartoon Get Fuzzy, is named after him (Satchel is, of course, named for Satchel Paige).

Rest in peace, Buck. Enjoy the Field of Dreams.

I finished the first draft of my outline for my NaNoNovel. I haven't started writing, I promise! The rules say that outlining's OK, and I'm taking advantage of that. It's the first time I've written an outline for something I'm going to write. My experience from the last time I did NaNo and actually won (two years ago) is that I really need to know where I'm going before I start writing. I'm sure that there will be revisions to the outline over the next several weeks, but I promise, no writing until November 1.

So, that's how my writing has been going. That's one of the things I said I was going to work on for the "back to school" project. Everything else is pretty much status quo, though I've been slacking off on the morning pages (largely because I've been inspired to do some actual work[!] in the mornings, but partly because Mary's been getting up with me in the AM), which I was doing to give myself some focus.

The weather here has been just beautiful, and probably will be for several more weeks, at which point it'll probably start raining all the time. I'm sitting out on the deck with Mary. The guy next door is driving a backhoe around his property, leveling it off. And life is good, and the world is made of doughnuts.

EDIT: speaking of later, LJ seems to think that I'm posting this an hour later than it is. Go figure.

Here's a good one!

My LiveJournal Sitcom
All My johlt (FX, 9:00): johlt (Olivia Newton-John) gets a job as secretary to lisapt (Winona Ryder). The next day, bayarts (Christopher Walken) thinks draiguisge (Morgan Fairchild) is a Martian. On the other side of town, itzwicks (Yasmine Bleeth) gets mad at kywoman (Wil Wheaton) and decides to join the Peace Corps. Meanwhile, lourdesmont (Lisa Kudrow) takes summerlady (Clark Gable)'s nephew on a date and ends up necking. Upstairs, anahata56 (Bea Arthur) can't open meropa (Isabella Rossellini)'s jar of pickles. Craziness ensues.
What's Your LiveJournal Sitcom? (by rfreebern)

I can actually see Bea Arthur as anahata56, Isabella Rossellini as meropa, and Lisa Kudrow as lourdesmont (even got the name right on that one!). Of course, Yasmine Bleeth as itzwicks is almost as preposterous as Olivia Newton-John as me, but....

I tend to use really long sentences. It's a habit I'm trying to break. That's not to say that long sentences are bad, just that I don't vary sentence length enough. You get the idea.
