Well, this is lovely...

I woke up at 5 AM and my left ear, which until yesterday had been giving me no trouble, was very sore. I made the mistake of touching it, and it was like someone drove an icepick into it. When I got up at 8, I discovered that I was bleeding. So, it was off to the emergency clinic, where I learned that I have both an upper respiratory infection and an outer ear infection (what they typically call "swimmer's ear"), and I might very well have punctured my left eardrum. So, I have antibiotics to take, one orally and one dripped into my ear. The doctor was also very nice and gave me a prescription for Norvasc, for the hypertension that I've been trying to ignore all this time.

I'll tell you, not being able to hear, even a little bit, is scary. Your prayers and good thoughts would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Prayers and good thoughts, and relief that you FINALLY went to the doctor. There is a reason they are in business, you know. (and I know you don't have insurance...)

Get better. Please.

Oh, I don't have a problem with doctors per se. Just the ones to whom I've been entrusting my health care up to this point. I think it's irresponsible for a doctor to leave someone on an expensive and ineffective medication for several years, which is what set me off in the first place. I think I've found someone better, and will be going to her during the next couple of weeks.

You and Anne. Have you two been up to something?

Good luck with the ears. Hopefully they will be back to normal again soon.

I'll send you heathen energy since prayers are outside my comfort zone.

I swear, Anne and I haven't been up to anything.

I'll take anything at this point. Even St. John the Conqueror Root.

A lot of sympathy from the one with nonfunctioning ossicles in her left ear...

Thanks. Hey, did they prescribe any antibiotics for you? I've got some that I take orally and others that I drip into my ears.

No, no antibiotics as there is apparently no infection. Just the FloNase in the hopes the problem is due to pressure from the sinuses.

You know you always have my good thoughts! And prayers, too. I hope that your ear doesn't have the eardrum punctured (how could you have done THAT, anyway? I didn't think you could reach that far into the ear!) and that the hypertension drug works -- we don't want to lose you to silly non-going-to-the-doctor!

I'm not sure exactly what I did. All I did was touch it, and suddenly it was like someone jammed an icepick into it. There must have been a lot of pressure built up in it, because I remember that it felt as though there was a lot of fluid building up in it, and I touched it to see if I could get it to drain.

As for the hypertension drug, he gave me a calcium blocker, one of the two meds in Lotrel, which I had been taking and which hadn't done a damn bit of good. I think I need a diuretic, but those are generic (about $10 for a three-month supply) so the doctor doesn't get as big of a kickback.
