Update: My right ear, the one that was giving me trouble originally, is now more or less open. The left ear is still shut down, although it's dry, so it doesn't appear to be bleeding. I've got 10 days worth of antibiotics, all of which I plan on taking and/or squirting into my ear. Believe me, I don't want to have to put up with this crap ever again.

I saw a bumper sticker today from one of the local schools, whose mascot is the silverback gorilla. I can just imagine their cheers:

Give me an O!
O!
Give me an O!
O!
Give me an O!
O!
What's that spell?
Ooo! Ooo! Ooo! Ooo!

My mind works in mysterious ways.

We're expecting rain and cold temps tonight, which means that, by the morning, Atlanta should be an icy mess. I stay in when things like that happen. I really don't have anywhere to go tomorrow, anyway, since the boss has ordered me to take care of myself, because I'm no good to him when I'm sick. And, yes, lourdesmont, I know, it's going to be sunny and warm where you are, and yes, annef, I know it's going to be snowy and negative centigrades or Celsiuses or whatever you use up in Canada. meropa and wicked_x_game, maybe you two will get lucky and not have to go to school tomorrow...

One of the things I like about Atlanta is that you get four seasons, but winter is short and mild and spring and fall are beautiful. One of the things I'm learning to like, albeit from inside, is the long, hot summer. Summer is much more comfortable in Chicago, but I'm now at a point in my life where I wouldn't go back there, not even to escape the summer heat.

majkia and I were discussing the idea of writing muses. I told her that, while I didn't feel that I had a muse, if I did, it would be a Marine drill sergeant. So, today, Mary and I are sitting in Starbucks, doing what we usually do (drink coffee, she knits, I scribble in a notebook), and I had this image of my muse sitting on the toilet. Don't ask me why I thought that was so funny. Maybe it's the drugs.

I'm happy for closed captioning. I was able to watch NCIS and House last night without being able to hear.

I realized that what the two shows have in common are very strong relationships between the characters, some of them friendly, some not so friendly. They create such intense conflict, and yet, at the end of the day, they get the job done, and someone looks brilliant. NCIS may have the edge there, because every week it's a different person: one week, it'll be DiNozzo, another week, it'll be McGee, another week, it's Gibbs, etc. House is more a study of Dr. House, so it took a while to see how crucial the relationships between him, the administrator, the lawyer (his ex-wife) and the other members of his team were going to work out, but I've come to enjoy it mostly because Hugh Laurie is such a riot.

I've learned to treat our hot hot parts of summer much as I treated the coldest nastiest winter days when I lived in New England. I stay in where the house is comfortable as much as possible.

I miss snow, I have to admit. But still... Spring and Fall and most of Winter make it all worth while.

We get just enough snow for me to appreciate it. Since I've been here, we've been dumped on twice, in addition to having two ice storms on successive weekends in 2000 (one of them being Super Bowl weekend). 2000 was just a realy crappy year all around...

For heaven's sake, Anne, if you're going to call me a wiener, at least spell it right. :P

We now have a winter storm warning up. For us, that typically means ice or "wintry mix" which typically means sleet and snow that freezes into ice. I don't care where you're from, ice is nasty, unless it's in a drink. Still, I wouldn't trade it for the kind of temperatures that I saw last week (-5 to -8 Fahrenheits), or the kind of cold I used to see in Chicago.
