Your senior year in High School is supposed to be "the best year of your life."
Let's see how much you remember:
Who was your best friend?
Mark Bohrer. He's on Ghostletters now.
Who did you have a crush on?
Elizabeth Hopfe, my lab partner in chemistry. I didn't work up the courage to ask her out until she started dating someone else.
What sports did you play?
Played a mean game of catch on Churchill Street.
What kind of car did you drive?
I didn't drive until I was 28.
It's Friday night, where were you at?
At home, watching the tube. Johnny Carson, The Midnight Special.
Were you in the "In Crowd"
Ever skip school?
Only on Senior Ditch Day.
Quite heavily back then.
Were you a nerd?
Did you get suspended/expelled?
Yes. In junior year, I was caught smoking in a girls' bathroom. Long story.
Can you sing the Alma Mater?
I didn't realize that my school even HAD an alma mater. It was the 70s.
Who was your favorite teacher?
Betty Keoughan (Latin and Greek all 3 years I was at New Trier), Suzanne Billhymer (Junior year English), Gary Anderson (Junior Algebra), John Druska (Freshman English)
Greek in Senior year. It was self study.
What was your school's full name?
Freshman year: St. Ignatius College Prep, Chicago, IL
Sophomore through Senior years: New Trier Township High School West, Northfield, IL
None per se. We were the Wolves at St. Ignatius, the Cowboys at New Trier West. (New Trier East, alma mater to Charlton Heston and Ann-Margret, were the Indians. Now that both high schools have merged, they're called the Trevians.)
Did you go to Prom?
Yes. I'd rather not talk about it.
Where did you work?
I was a produce clerk at the Jewel, the receptionist at my parish in Freshman year (I paid my own tuition, I'll have everyone know), and I did the odd babysitting.
If you could go back and do it over, would you?
I've often said that I'd like to do high school and college over if I knew then what I know now, but I wouldn't know now what I had to learn then if I hadn't. So, no freaking way.
