A few wonderful post-election quotes from the Bard of Baltimore, H. L. Mencken:

An idealist is one who, on noticing that a rose smells better than a cabbage, concludes that it will also make better soup.

Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right.

Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance.

Democracy is also a form of worship. It is the worship of Jackals by Jackasses.

Democracy is the art and science of running the circus from the monkey cage.

I almost used this quote on QuickNews, but I thought better of it... it is fitting, though.

My personal favorites are the one about jackasses worshipping jackals, the one about running the circus from the monkey cage, and the one about the collective wisdom of individual stupidity.
