Coming to you from Clarksville, TN

For all the drive up to Chicago, we spent all of about two hours at the building (our entire reason for driving up in the first place), most of it today. I changed batteries in smoke detectors, the guy came to clean the space heaters, we loaded a cedar chest into the van and got the hell out of Dodge. We made it all the way through Illinois and all the way down I-24 through Kentucky and into Tennessee (about an hour northwest of Nashville). We had a good dinner at Outback, stopped at Books-A-Million for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (on Mary's mind since we watched the second and third Harry Potter movies yesterday at the hotel) and a mocha (for me; far too much chocolate for my tastes).

I don't want to talk about the building. It's Mary's problem. She's going to have to deal with it eventually, and doesn't want to be pushed until then. I'm into keeping the peace at my house.

It was a pretty good time, aside from the building stuff. We stayed in halfway decent hotels with high-speed Internet access the whole way, I got a chance to do some reading (the first book in Mary Janice Davidson's Undead series. I have a lot of friends who are into vampires, and these books are a slightly more irreverent take on the genre), and we haven't had a fight yet. And it was nice to get away from the fact that I'm out of work and out of shape (I did do a little working out yesterday) and my office is a mess and I don't know where to begin. It cleared my mind and let me start to think about some of the writing that I'd like to do during my downtime, not to mention some things that I'd like to do (get my certification in networks and RedHat engineering, set up my website, update my resume, etc.) from a professional perspective.

Oh, incidentally: you all have been looking at the icon that I've been using, which is a cigar store Indian that used to be an advertisement for White Owl cigars and is now the advertisement for the optometrist's office on which it stands at the corner of 63rd and Pulaski on the south side of Chicago. I passed it today, and they have added a pair of glasses to it. God, I wish I had the camera....
